Home Remedies for Appetite Control

Home Remedies for Appetite Control

Controlling your appetite can be one of the biggest challenges of weight management. Hunger is your body’s way of telling you it’s received fewer calories than normal. It’s a natural process. It’s easy to think, when you’re hungry, that you need to eat. That’s not true. The key to weight loss is the reduction of calories: you must burn more calories than you consume. It’s simple math. There are things you can do at home that will fool your body, and control your appetite.

  1. Foods

    • Certain food and fluids, added to your diet, will naturally suppress your hunger. Filling your stomach with food that has few calories will turn off the hunger sensor. Water is a powerful appetite suppressant. When you first start to feel hungry, try drinking a quick eight ounces of water. This works almost every time.
Next, you can try organic vegetable broth. It is available at most stores and has no artificial chemicals that will do more harm than good, such as MSG or yeast extract. It also has less salt. You can drink as much organic vegetable broth as it takes to quiet your stomach.
Green leafy vegetables, such as lettuce or cabbage, are low in calories and high in water content, and are foods that you don’t need to regulate. Eat as much as you want. The calories are so low, it’s not necessary to count them.

    Exercise

    • The rule of thumb regarding exercise and appetite control is the harder you work, the less hungry you will be. Any exercise plan you choose should result in raising your body temperature. The best choices for appetite suppressant are aerobics, such as running. Start with 15-minute sessions several times a week and build until you’re working out at least 30 to 40 minutes at a time. Swimming is a poor choice for hunger control because you do not raise your body temperature when you swim.

    Herbal Supplements

    • Herbal supplements are a natural way to suppress your appetite. The long-term effects of some supplements are unknown. There are no herbal supplements approved by the FDA. However, evidence shows green tea to be an effective weight loss aid. Green Tea is available in tablet form, hot tea, or as an additive to some cold drinks. The University of Maryland Health Center states that green tea increases your metabolism and provides effective fat burning. Some side effects of green tea include bloating, indigestion and diarrhea.

    Warnings

    • Any plan to lose weight should start with a visit to your doctor. It important to determine if there are underlying conditions that will keep your from losing weight. If you are taking medication for any illness, be sure to ask your doctor before taking any supplements.
