Treating Gum Disease Can Help Rheumatoid Arthritis

Treating Gum Disease Can Help Rheumatoid Arthritis

Do you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis? One simple way to help treat this condition is to take care of your teeth. Although at first glance the connection between a joint disease and oral health seems odd, studies have found that the link between poor tooth and gum care and rheumatoid arthritis is very real.
In a recent study, researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and University Hospitals of Cleveland looked at 40 patients who had both severe rheumatoid arthritis and moderate to severe periodontal disease. The patients were divided into four separate groups. The first group received drugs that block the production of a bodily toxin known as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF), which is produced as a result of periodontal disease, and also got non-surgical periodontal treatment to clean out the infected areas in the gums. The second group got the TNF-blocking drugs but no periodontal cleaning. The third group did not receive any drugs but got the periodontal cleaning, and the fourth group received neither drugs nor cleaning. The results? Both groups of patients who received periodontal cleaning experienced a reduction in their arthritis pain, the number of swollen joints they had, and their degree of morning stiffness, especially the group that also received the anti-TNF drugs. The patients who didn't get the periodontal cleanings saw no measurable improvement in their rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.
Need more proof that periodontal health and rheumatoid arthritis are linked? An earlier study, conducted in 2001 in Australia, compared 65 people with rheumatoid arthritis with 65 healthy people and discovered that the arthritis sufferers were more than twice as likely have periodontal disease as the control group.
Why are gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis linked? Put simply, they are both inflammatory diseases. Researchers believe that the toxins created by rotting teeth and gums may spread systemically throughout the body, triggering inflammation in the joints and resulting in rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Reducing the inflammation by cleaning and removing infection in the teeth and gums helps calm inflammation elsewhere in the body.
Bottom line: If you've got rheumatoid arthritis, be vigilant about your oral health. Schedule frequent cleanings and keep your mouth scrupulously clean. Your joints will thank you for it.

The Link between Gum Disease and Arthritis

The Link between Gum Disease and Arthritis

If the eyes are the window to the soul, then the mouth is the portal to our health. Oral conditions are associated with general health problems and may be an early indicator that you have another disease or disorder lurking in your body.
The medical community has clearly established a link between periodontal disease--or periodontitis--and other diseases, especially coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's and chronic inflammatory conditions. Periodontitis is a disease of the tissues and structures that surround our teeth. It's the technical term for gum disease.
Arthritis and periodontal disease are similar. Both are chronic inflammatory conditions. Arthritis wreaks havoc on the cartilage and connective tissue in joints, destroying bones, wearing away at our bone density, and making our bones fragile and vulnerable to fracture.
Periodontitis is persistent inflammation in the gums. Medical experts suspect toxins from bacterial infections cause this inflammation. It can destroy the soft and hard tissues in the mouth, reducing the connective tissue that attaches the root of a tooth to the jawbone--called periodontal attachment loss.
Evidence suggests that periodontal disease may initiate and maintain the autoimmune inflammatory response in Rheumatoid Arthritis and is therefore a risk factor we can influence. Symptoms of periodontal disease should prompt physicians to screen patients for Rheumatoid Arthritis and other disorders.
The link between the two diseases goes both ways. Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis may also be at increased risk for developing periodontal disease. The prevalence of periodontal disease in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients is at least twice the incidence found in the general population.
Researchers believe that oral hygiene may only account for a part of this association. However, they note that patients with arthritis may have limited dexterity in their hands, which can lead to a decline in oral hygiene.
Treating the inflammation of periodontitis provides relief from the diseaseand may help manage other existing chronic inflammatory diseases. Studies have shown that non-surgical periodontal therapy has a positive effect on the signs and symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis, regardless of which medicine the patient takes.
If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, maintain good oral health, see your dentist regularly and seek treatment immediately if you develop periodontal infections or other problems in your mouth.

Boil your milk the right way!!!!

Did you know that boiling and re-boiling milk on high frame

for an extended period of time affects the nutritional content

of the milk? Did you know that consumption of fresh milk is

always better, and just one boil is enough to retain the

 nutrients?

Don't boil the milk at very high temperature for a long time.

Boiling and re-boiling milk at high temperature for a long

time affects the nutritional content of the milk, particularly

the B group (B1, B2, and B12) of vitamins. These vitamins

evaporate as heat increases. Milk is a form of protein and

the protein percentage could reduce, if exposed to excess

heat.

A recent study reveals

43% people boil and re-boil milk two-three times and 39%

boil it more than three times

46% people boil milk on high flame

62% people boil milk for more than five minutes

84% people find boiling milk a tedious exercise. 75% people

are even looking out for an alternative - milk that need not

be boiled and can be readily consumed.

Types of milk consumed in the city

Sourced from milkman 45%, Poly pack 73%, Tetra pack 2%

The Right Way

Do not boil milk for extended period of time

Do not leave your milk out in the open after boiling;

 refrigerate it immediately

Do not heat milk repeatedly

Stir the milk while boiling

Do not use microwave-ovens to heat and re-heat milk

Use ultra high temperature milk that come in tetra packs. It

 guarantees both nutrition and convenience

Your Heart Has An Ear. My Ear Has A Heart

Ah, Loss.
Ah, Loss.
My hearing loss to be precise.
Last week I went through a period of depression where I was feeling very sorry for myself because what I am missing out on must be so much. So spectacular. So profound. So much must be lost on me.
I am the lone angel with just one wing.
I am the confused face in a sea of understanding nods and smiles.
Then I come back from the Very Dark Place.
Things which I have indeed lost: My eating disorder, my keys, my 20’s, my appetite for drama, my desire to be an actress, a wallet once with 400 dollars in tips from waitressing right before Thanksgiving, my diamond earrings.
Things I have not lost but thought I had: my father, the sound of quiet.
If I try hard enough I can find these things I thought I lost in corners and caves and unexpected rooms of my life.
What have you truly lost along the way? What have you thought you lost only to wake up and realize that it was with you all along?—its hand right there, over your heart, where you left it.
What if I am not missing anything at all? What if everything I ever needed is right here? Even if it sounds a little different to my elephant ears? What if my father is right over there, on a couch in my room right now, smoking his Kools, having a good old laugh at how serious I take my life. What if he’s telling me to “Lighten up, you’re not missing much, kiddo”?
Maybe elephants can hear mountains. Maybe each mountain range creates a different sound, a different tone when the wind blows over it. A soundscape as vivid as a landscape, only visible to an elephant’s ears.
I am like an elephant.
I can hear the mountains talking to me. I can hear the sun and the wind, the sky also when no one else can. These phantom sounds have guided me through the plains of my life. I read lips to guide me through the terrain.
And when the lips fail me, I have always thought I was lost.
The thick jelly roll of noise
filled with soft syllables and unspoken words
is all around you if you just
open the ear in your heart.
Tune the fork which vibrates in your chest
which knows when something is said,
even if it isn’t.
 I am the deaf poet.
 I hear you.
Clamoring up there in your head
fighting with your own thoughts who
use swords and knives and vicious words to win.
Relying on trickery.
Some things will break or be lost.
There will always be a hole
Where the sound of wind passing through
will be a loud, lonely sound
that I alone can hear.
You must fill that hole with memories,
songs your father sang you, people you love,
your children, favorite songs, photographs.
You must fill it and seal it
With wet sand, bricks, mortar.
And then hang a sign that says
“No Vacancy”.
You’re full up.
I am the deaf poet.
I rely on the train of the invisible,
its texture dense, heavy mud.
Your heart has an ear.
My ear has a heart.
I can hear things that you can’t.
I can feel the warrior in yoga, the curl of the back. The opening of the heart.
Even if I miss the direction.
I can hear the quiet in between the quiet, the arches of eyebrows, the pursing of lips. I can hear the music of unspoken gestures, the tick-tock of need, the roaring of lust, the whining of dissatisfaction. I can hear the tree frog sound of anger even though your mouth, moving in circles, eludes me.
Nothing is lost.

Yoga for Eyesight.........

Yoga for Eyesight.........

1. Move your eyes as upward as possible and move it as far downward as you can. Repeat this exercise four times more and blink a couple of times, so that the muscles in the eyes get to relax. Once you complete 5 sets of this activity, close your eyes for about a minute or two, to allow the muscles in your eyes to rest.
2. Keep your eyes wide open and from the left side to the right, without putting any strain on the eyes. This exercise needs to be repeated four times too and you can blink frequently, to rest the muscles in your eyes.

3. Roll you eyes in the clockwise direction slowly. Start by lowering your eyes, so that you are looking at the floor and then slowly move your eyes to the left side and continue rolling them higher, till you are looking at the ceiling. Roll your eyes to look at your right side and then lower them till you are looking at the floor again. Blink your eyes and close them for a few seconds, allowing them to rest. After one round repeat the exercise in the anticlockwise direction
