TULSI LEAVES MEDICINAL USES

Tulsi is considered as sacred or holy herb that grows about 100 cm in height, widely grown in waste lands near fields and Tulsi herb is seen in almost in every Indian home as it is ubiquitous in Hindu tradition, and it is being worshiped twice a day in many Homes in India, and also called as Holy Basil. The three varieties of Thulasi are generally found, which are Kirshna Tulsi or Holy Tulsi, Vana Tulsi and Rama Tulsi, and among them the most popular is Krishna Tulsi herb. It is widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its medicinal qualities.
Tulsi leaves and the entire herb, including roots possess medicinal properties, luteolin, ursolic acid, epigenin which are chemical substances found in Tulsi Leaves and that is being isolated for medicinal purposes. Tulsi leaves possess antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, anabolic, antimalarial, antidepressant, adaptogenic, immunodilator, antifertility, antiallergic, antistress, antidiabetic properties are found due to the presence of biologically active chemical compounds. Carminative, stimulant and diaphoretic properties are also found in Tulsi leaves. It is also used for the treatment of heart disorders.
Tulsi leaves Medicinal Uses include, it improves memory and acts as a tonic to nervous system, it clears phlegm and catarrhal matter from upper and lower respiratory tracts, thereby provide effective relief from cold and cough. Tulsi leaves juice is able to prevent fevers, even malaria and dengue fever and reduces body temperature, when this juice is given with cardamom, milk and sugar and it should be given at three hours of regular intervals to bring down the fever and temperature. Tulsi leaves extract is found in many Ayurvedic cough syrups as it is very effective to neutralize mucus and phlegm in bronchitis and provides quick relief from cough, flu and cold.

It provides relief from sore throat if it is taken with boiled water. Tulsi leaves are made as decoction along with common salt and cloves that provide relief from influenza, and if it is taken with ginger and honey it provides relief from respiratory disorders, prevent asthma and bronchitis. Tulsi leaves extract strengthens stomach and increases perspiration; it improves the health of kidneys. If the Tulsi leaves extract or juice with honey is taken regularly for at least six months, it clears or removes calculus or kidney stones through urinary tract. It reduces Cholesterol and improves heart health.
For children disorders like common cold, flu, cough and fever, Tulsi leaves juice or extract or medicine made with this, is recommended as it provides natural and effective healing process. Due to the presence of adaptogen, it relieves stress and removes impurities in the blood stream and provides relaxation to muscles and nerves. Tulsi leaves prevents skin disorders and used in the treatment of ringworm infections and even in leucoderma infections. Roots of Tulsi extract can heal insect bites and leech bites infection and Tulsi leaves juice should be taken internally to heal insect stings and bites. As it improves the health of the skin, it is being used one of the components in Soaps.
Tulsi leaves are also effective for the prevention of mouth ulcers, improve oral hygiene, prevent tooth decay, strengthen gums, and prevent pyrrohea, due to these properties it is being added as one of the components in toothpastes. Tulsi leaves paste added with sandalwood paste is being applied on the fore head to get relief from headache and also juice of Tulsi also recommended for the relief of headache, as it provides cooling and soothing effect. It has been found that two or three drops of Tulsi leaves juice are put into the eyes during bedtime, heals night blindness, as it is rich in Vitamin A.
